Charitable Giving

Although I try to give back throughout the year, the holidays are generally a time when we are reminded that giving a little extra can make a big difference.

I love buying gifts that make people happy and this is definitely one way to make that happen. In addition to the requested gift (godzilla figurines) my nephew asked for this Christmas, I gave to the Santa Barbara Zoo on his behalf.  He’s quite a regular there and loves the giraffes, so I donated specifically to the feeding and care of the giraffe herd. He’ll receive a picture of the animals with detailed information on them and his name will go on a plaque of donors.  I hope to make this a tradition which encourages his continued love of animals as well as a sense of charity.

If you’re thinking of donating take a look at the links below for ideas on where to start, I know they’ve helped me jump start my giving:

Toys for Tots - This is an easy way to give back as there are drop off centers conveniently located all across the country.

World Wildlife Fund - They have a very extensive catalog of items in a wide range of prices and seem to have been around forever!

Save the Children - I really love the idea of giving something big like a goat or donkey to a family that can use either in so many ways.

National Public Radio - I don’t know about you, but I find it hard to resist their quarterly fund drives.  They always offer something enticing and I feel good supporting those who keep me informed.

St. Jude Children’s Hospital - Thanks and Giving Campaign - This campaign is an easy way to give a bit here and there.  Many retailers are involved in the program and you can simply add a dollar amount on to your purchase to fund pediatric research.

Charity Navigator - It’s also easy to find something close to you (either personally or physically) by using this site to evaluate charities.

Happy giving this season!
